How to explain plastic pollution to children

Updated: May 25, 2023

We believe that children will solve the growing problems of plastic pollution and global warming.

But they can be daunting and overwhelming topics, so how do we talk to kids about these global problems?

Check out these resources to help kids have fun, learn about plastic pollution and how to protect our planet.

1- Nat Geo Kids

This is one of the best and most comprehensive resources on everything from endangered species to protecting the environment and battling plastic pollution. National Geographic for Kids is an interactive learning tool, which offers a lot of learning opportunities, from lessons and quizzes to games and educational videos.

2- Climate Kids by Nasa

This is another excellent interactive tool for children, where they can explore a variety of topics. Children will learn through the games, videos, quiz and activities you can do with them.

3- Earth's Ekko cartoon

Earth's Ekko is a animated cartoon/documentary made by Plastic Oceans International, a nonprofit organisation working to end global plastic pollution. It's very well done, and easy to understand.

4- UNEP

We like the UNEP activities page for kids, which teaches children to upcycle plastic and get creative.

On a more general note, you will find a lot of resources to read and watch about plastic pollution impacts biodiversity and our human rights. They also recommend vetted charities NGOs and organisations that you can support to fight plastic pollution.

5-Book: Duffy's Lucky Escape

Duffy's Lucky Escape is beautifully written and easy to understand book for young children.

It narrates the story of Duffy the Sea Turtle and her unlucky encounter with ocean plastic. It's a positive, inspiring, beautifully illustrated true story about the problem of ocean plastics, but with a happy ending.

6- Book: What A Waste: Rubbish, Recycling, and Protecting our Planet

This book is filled with lots of exciting ideas on how to make our planet a better place to live.
